The institution was first established in  1979 by the former Anambra State Government as a College of Arts and Science. In June 1980, the institution was upgraded to College of Arts and Science and Technology. In 1985, the College transformed into Ananmbra State Polytechnic, Oko (ANAMPOLY). The institution further metamorphosed to Federal Polytechnic, Oko in 1993, following the proclamation of erstwhile President Ibrahim Babangida. The institution later became a creation of the federal law via the  Polytechnic Act.

The institution has since then turned out quality students who have excelled in industry, politics, business and other areas of human endeavour. The polytechnic is also blessed with staff who have proved their mettle in academics, administration, governance and the industry.
