Okopoly conference: Lecturers root for B. Tech in polytechnics

* Calls for more funding of tertiary education

ASUP  national conference  ended at Federal Polytechnic, Oko Wedenesday with a call for adequate funding of polytechnic education. The conferees also agree that polytechnics should award Bachelors of Technology in line with the amended Polytechnic Act as amended 2019. 

The conference was organised by Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Federal Polytechnic, Oko  and has the theme: Technological Education for National Development. Eminent scholars from across the country are participating. Lead papers were variously  read by Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof Charles Esimone, Dr. Chris Ezeibe of Department of Political Science, UNN, and Dr. Stone Oderaa of Chemical Engineering, Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Charles Esimone represented by Prof. Solomon Nwigbo emphasised  the importance of retraining of academic staff to meet the challenges of the technology as well as quality teaching.

At the end of the event, Chairman Conference Committee Dr. Onyeka Uwakwe  read the communique which in part, urged government to protect the education sector from collapse through increased funding. Dr Uwakwe commended the participants for being part of the event and called on government and private sector to take up research findings. He also stated that quality papers arising from the conference shall be reviewed for publication soon.

Earlier in a vote of thanks, Chapter Chairman of ASUP, Federal Polytechnic, Oko Comrade Signor Igbokwe expressed happiness on the success of the conference. Comrade Igbokwe also thanked the lead paper presenters for their superlative engagement with the conferees.
